Kelly grew up in San Diego
and fell in love with rock and roll at an early age. His early influences
were Emerson,
Lake, and
Palmer and Deep Purple and he played in a number of high school rock bands
with his older brother Randy, a drummer. At this time, Kelly was already
writing songs for the bands in which he played. One song that was
submitted for the KGB Homegrown album actually received considerable
airplay, but didn’t quite make it on the album. Kelly moved to the South San Francisco Bay area to attend college for a computer degree, but he managed to slip in a number of courses to further his musical education. At that time, he was attracted by jazz-rock instrumental music such as Brand X and the Dixie Dregs. He became a member of a talented instrumental band named Tempest that had a modest degree of success with a number of original tunes throughout the region. After college, Kelly moved back to San Diego and became involved in 80s dance rock and roll, once again kicking out the jams in several projects with brother Randy. After performing with many incarnations of various bands in San Diego including, most recently, The M-80s, he once again finds himself surrounded by top-notch talent in Spectrum. |
